New Orleans is a place unlike any other, and home to many artists, musicians and writers. It's culture is known to be welcoming to creative people, and draws many people who are often young and wanting a place to explore art and music and life in a community that is rich in these things. Many people travel to new Orleans with almost nothing, and slowly begin lives there. The local community is very musical, you see buskers and street performance all over the french quarter and many other parts of the city. These performers range greatly in age and experience. It is not uncommon to see very talented musicians busking in the street, many of them young and very poor. Among them are also many locals who have been deeply effected by Hurricane Katrina.
A fire broke out in a ninth ward warehouse on a cold night last week, killing 8 young people who were squatting there for temporary shelter. Information about the incident is still coming together. More can be seen on the page below, please let me know if you have information I should add.
